Dilico Anishinabek Family Care is encouraging more families and individuals to open their homes and hearts to support children who need a safe place to live.
Dilico foster parents come from all ages and backgrounds and a variety of life stages, but they all share the same vision. They provide a safe nurturing, loving and supportive home for children who are unable to live with their parents, are positive role models and ensure children’s social, emotional, physical and educational needs are met.
What is a Foster Parent?
Our foster parents offer their home to help children feel safe, secure, and loved in the middle of very challenging circumstances. Foster Parents have a tremendous part to play in these situations, and help children thrive. When a child is placed in the care of Dilico Anishinabek Family Care, Alternative Care Families in Thunder Bay and the district provide a safe and caring temporary home for a child.

Who can be a Foster Parent?
Dilico’s Alternative Caregivers are caring, loving, team-orientated individuals who lead healthy lifestyles and are committed to making a positive difference for a child. Caregivers are individuals who are committed to meeting physical, emotional, spiritual and cultural needs of a child.
Alternative Caregivers recognize the importance of a child’s connection to family, extended family and communities. It’s important to demonstrate a willingness to learn and appreciate Anishinabek culture.
If you are a family with young or adult children, a family with no children, a single parent, retired or stay at home parent— if you have a love for children and have their best interests in mind, you can apply to join our family and care for a child in need.

Children have all different needs and come from several different home environments. Dilico works with our foster parents every step of the way and provides on-going support to every individual child’s needs, Dilico Anishinabek Family Care gives on-going support for all family members including its foster parents. Staff provides a wide variety of supports that includes cultural education, 24-hour on-call support, and professional support staff.

The Mikinaak Service Model
Mikinaak, a sacred Anishinabek Teaching symbolizes an approach to life with a sense of purpose and represents Dilico Anishinabek Family Care Customary Care standards. The First Nation Community, family and extended family are involved in ensuring a child’s safety and wellbeing.
It is believed that it takes a community to raise a child. The Mikinaak Service Model for Customary Care in the direct, active involvement of the child’s community members working in partnership assisting parents in the care of their children in times of need. We draw on local traditions of caring in order to ensure that children remain a part of the family, extended family and community.
